Biomedical
engineering is a department in The Johns Hopkins University School of
Medicine and a program in the Whiting School of Engineering.
Biomedical engineering became a department in the School of Medicine in
1970. Since then, the Department has grown to more than 50 faculty
members (23 primary appointments), 500 undergraduate students, and 130
graduate students, including MSE, PhD, and MD/PhD candidates.
In 1999, we received a Biomedical Engineering Leadership Award given by
the Whitaker Foundation.
Our world-class educational and research programs span the Schools of
Medicine, Engineering, and Arts and Sciences. The Master's and
Undergraduate programs, combined, are the largest in the School of
Engineering. The PhD program is administered by a committee of faculty
from all three schools, and our MD/PhD students are part of the School
of Medicine's MD/PhD program.
Research within the department can be divided into seven Research Areas:
Tissue Engineering, Cardiovascular Systems, Imaging, Systems
Neuroscience, Molecular and Cell Systems, Neuroengineering and
Computational Modeling. Ongoing research collaborations with faculty
from the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Arts and Sciences provide
an exciting environment of cross-fertilization. The Department also has
close ties with the Center for Hearing and Balance, Mind Brain
Institute, Applied Physics Laboratory and the Center for Cardiovascular
Bioinformatics and Modeling.
Our 23 primary faculty are complemented by more than 30 faculty from
other departments and divisions of the University who hold joint and
secondary appointments in biomedical engineering. These faculty
participate in our teaching and research programs and provide research
opportunities for our students at all levels.
